Major restoration project in Bochum, featuring our blasting abrasive Asilikos

In January 2024, an extensive restoration project kicked off in Bochum (Germany): The double headframe above the German Mining Museum (Deutsches Bergbau-Museum) got a much-needed makeover.

Years of exposure to wind and weather had taken its toll on the steel structure, making repairs necessary. Before restoration work could begin, however, the old layers of paint had to be removed.

XERVON Oberflächentechnik GmbH was tasked with the job and chose our blasting abrasive Asilikos. Known for its efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and ease of disposal, Asilikos quickly delivered the desired cleaning results. A big thank you to the team from XERVON Oberflächentechnik for the fantastic collaboration!

Representing EP Power Grit, our colleague Kevin Brose oversaw the project – an assignment close to his heart as a proud Bochum native. Having grown up in the city, he knows just how much this landmark means to the local community.

Historical facts about the headframe

The headframe has stood above the German Mining Museum in Bochum since 1973. Previously, it was located at the Germania mine in Dortmund-Marten. After the mine was closed in 1971, the double headframe was dismantled into individual parts and brought to Bochum. With a weight of 650 tonnes, a height of around 70 m and a diameter of the sheaves of around 8 m, it was considered to be the world's largest headframe at the time, as well as one of the most modern and most powerful winding systems in the German coal mining industry.
